Importance of the Front Matter

There is usually some prints on the starting pages in a book which many people wonder about. Many times most people just skip that information since they do not see any importance in reading it. However, the information contained on the first books pages serves a great importance. The total of the contents in the initial pages of a book is called the front matter.

The shortest part of the book is the first part which is called the front matter. Front matter can also be referred to in other words as preliminary matter. The front matter in most cases can be simple containing the topic of the book. We can also have the front matter composed of more information. This additional material can be contained in various pages with the title, a foreword, preface and other information. The introduction of the book as well as the preface can be contained in the preliminary matter together with a number of title pages.

It is common practice that the preliminary matter differs due to the printing style of a given book. The front matter used is usually distinct to various printing organizations. We have different examples of front matter as contained in different books.

An example of preliminary matter is when we have a page that only contains the title referred to as the half title. There is usually omission of the name of the author and subtitles in this part of the front matter. The second content of the front matter is usually the page or pages which also contain the title. The title pages contain information that includes the full title, author’s name, as well as other titles.

The type of the book usually determines whether there will be additional information on the title pages. Some of the information found on the title pages may include the name of the publisher and his address. Content regarding reprinting of the book and the actual event of printing can also be found here. Many more details can be found on the title pages.

Information on dedication of the book is also found in the preliminary matter. Identifications of people who the publication is dedicated to are found in the dedication. In some cases there occurs an echo by the writer concerning a matter that is not particularly in line with the publication. This quotation appears in the preliminary matter as an epigraph.

Many books usually contain a brief titling of what is contained in the book. This is usually midway in the front matter section and it could be just plain or giving more information. This gives a list or slight description of various main topics in a book. The writer may at times acknowledge people who contributed in the publication of the book.
